Inquiry Content I want to develop tools that will help deaf and hard of hearing children improve their communication skills.
Project Overview Based on cases where communication gaps tend to occur between deaf people and hearing people, we have identified elements for smooth communication and created a visual thinking tool with the aim of cultivating self-understanding, process thinking, inference, and communication skills.
Implementation period August 2022 - March 2023

About the Project

At the request of the nonprofit organization Silent Voice, we created an illustrated toolkit to be used at their Deaf Academy, an after-school day care center for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Silent Voice, which not only works with children but also has an equal mix of deaf and hearing staff, plans to use the illustrated toolkit to improve communication skills among staff in the future.

Silent Voice ( https://silentvoice.org/ ) is a non-profit organization that continues to update relationships between deaf and hearing people and increase what they can do together through its activities in the education and employment sectors.

According to the Silent Voice team, they had conducted a survey between deaf and hearing staff, which revealed actual cases of communication gaps (between deaf people and hearing people), and asked themselves what skills they could develop in children's education to enable them to communicate better with each other. This is how they came up with this illustrated toolkit (a visual thinking tool), and that's what they asked us to do.

By incorporating the illustrated toolkit that has been created this time into daily work, the program aims to increase opportunities for students to develop self-understanding, process thinking, inference, and communication skills.

They also plan to hold workshops using the illustrated toolkit with deaf and hard of hearing children and hearing children in the future, hoping to update their communication through this interaction.
