We ran training based on Kaikei no Chizu (Map of Accounting) for employees of the sales company of a major manufacturer. Our CEO, Tetsuro Kondo, was the instructor, and two members of ZUKAI Inc. attended.

Background

Through the human resources development division of a publisher, we were asked to cover accounting as part of an overnight employee training. In addition to the basics of accounting, the request was to cover how to read the company's own financial statements. Using the company's own numbers as the subject was meant to help participants take the content as something that concerns them.

What we made

  • Lecture material: slides built on the diagrams from the book Kaikei no Chizu (Map of Accounting)
  • Material for the exercise: from the client's publicly available financial information, we gathered the minimum needed for the exercise into one document. This reduced the effort of looking things up and left more time for diagramming

How we worked

We received the request at the end of May 2023 and met with the client in June.

On the day, running from the morning into the afternoon, the first half was a lecture and the second half was group work. In the exercise, each group drew the balance sheet and the income statement on separate large sheets of paper and used sticky notes to arrange them in the form of the Map of Accounting. For participants who could not come to the venue, the client streamed the lecture online.

The way this training was run later became the starting point when we designed training for new employees at another company.
