We ran a business model diagram training for junior employees in a business division of a general trading company. Working in groups, participants diagrammed the businesses their own division handles, using business model diagrams (Bizgram).

Background

The request had three parts.

  • To run a training for junior employees
  • To deepen understanding of the company's own businesses by making business model diagrams
  • To strengthen ties within the department and build a sense of unity

The division covers a wide range of businesses, and some employees do not usually work together. We therefore had each group make one diagram of one business.

How we worked

  1. Lecture and workshop: we started by explaining how to draw a business model diagram
  2. Group work: each group spent about a month diagramming a business of their own division
  3. Feedback session: partway through, we gave advice on the content of the diagrams
  4. Final presentations: at the end, each group presented its diagram

A slide explaining the nine cells of Bizgram: three rows by three columns, with users in the top row, the business in the middle row, and the operator in the bottom row

The slide "Seven steps to make a diagram": filling in the cells in order, from the center column to the center row and then the four corners

Employees who do not usually work together worked as teams, and specialized businesses were turned into diagrams that are easy to understand.
