Strategy game training

Understand strategy frameworks together with how they connect, and know which one to use for which question.

Five worksheets: competitive strategy, fundraising, investment, facing risks and the ending. One fundraising option is checked

What you do

Run a business and choose its strategy

Length
About 3 hours
For
Also teams that rarely deal with business, such as design
Format
In person, discussing as teams

When it helps

  • Filling in frameworks becomes the goal, and it does not lead to decisions
  • There is too much to do and it is hard to decide what to drop
  • Strategy books and lectures alone do not make it click

Framework it builds on: Strategy Map →

How the game runs

This is how the package training runs. Made-to-order training is rearranged to fit your requests.

As a team, choose how to compete, how to raise money and where to invest. Risks are drawn by lot, and the ending depends on the path you took. At the end, you explain your choices in the words of the Strategy Map's frameworks.

  1. 01CompetitionRead the competitive landscape and decide whether to compete15 min
  2. 02FundraisingChoose how much money to raise for your strategy15 min
  3. 03InvestmentAllocate the points you earned across investments15 min
  4. 04RisksDraw risks by lot, as many as your fundraising choice setHighlight15 min
  5. 05EndingAs a team, find out which ending your choices led toHighlight10 min

On the day

  • Hands writing on the risk sheet with a pen
  • The fundraising sheet, with the team's sticky notes and the chosen option circled
  • A team reaching across one worksheet, writing on it

A moment in the game

Sheet 2, fundraising. The team picks one of three options.

2Fundraising

  • Take a big risk and raise more money than ever before
  • Avoid excessive risk and raise what the organisation needs
  • No fundraising needed

Raising more earns more points, but also means drawing more risks later.

What participants said

From post-training surveys, translated from Japanese.

We got excited saying "you can't decide from this text alone!" That was exactly the kind of experience that shows why you need the Strategy Map.
